Elmer Whipker Sr. and his wife Beryl started the family business in 1928.  Originally
Elmer opened an open air market on State Road 7, a little more than a mile from the
homestead.  It was not until almost 10 years later when Highway 31 was paved that it
moved to its current location. It started out as a small fruit stand built around a maple
tree.  Then was eventually moved to the barn where it is now.  It is still family owned and
operated by the youngest child of Elmer and Beryl’s, Alan and his wife Karen Whipker.
Their sons Mike and Doug help them in growing bedding plants, perennials, vegetable
plants and herbs in 14 greenhouses, and over 12,000 fall mums, plus 100 acres of
vegetable crops.  The market has two annual events one in the spring and another in the
fall.  The spring event is called the Spring Open House.  This event usually occurs the
first weekend of April.  During this time customers can walk through the growing
greenhouses.  The fall event is called the Whipker’s Pumpkin Festival.  This was started
in 2000 and usually occurs the first two weekends in October.  This event is kid oriented
with games and prizes and hayrides to the pumpkin patch.  More information on each
event is advertised each spring and fall.
